Inspired by Volosko, creativity and people, Kaokakao believes that the art of making pastries and cakes and transforming desserts into new combinations brings with it strong feelings of comfort and warmth, which we all need sometimes.

The feeling of safety and finesse, with memorable flavors that guests love to treat themselves to, even if only for a short time. Because Kaokakao wants to please and make guests feel happy and satisfied.

Our brand story

Before she was encouraged enough to open her own patisserie in Volosko, not even imagining the attention her cakes would attract, our owner Anja Žulić spent her days working in the hotel industry, tourism and administration, while evenings were reserved for creative work in her kitchen at home. Baking and enjoying in pastries and cakes have always been her passion, and she soon realized that if she wanted the cake to turn out well, it was important to follow the recipe.

Over time, she realized something personally even more important – that she has an exquisite talent for combining quality ingredients, a good sense for creativity, and skills for creating new combinations and recipes. In the beginning, the honor to taste her pastries and cakes belonged to her family members and friends, who were delighted with Anja’s desserts every time. While they admired and enjoyed her sweet delicacies, Anja dreamed of her own small patisserie.

Her knowledge gradually expanded and her skills improved, and the love for pastry-making developed into true art and mastery year after year. Anja went far beyond making homemade cakes, perfecting her knowledge through books, online courses, specialized fairs and trips, and later by attending professional workshops in Italy.

Finally, in 2011, in a small space located on the central street of her beloved Volosko, she opened Kaokakao as a patisserie that offers something new and different from typical desserts found in hotels in Opatija and other patisseries in Rijeka. Even though she was initially worried about how the market will accept such an innovative concept and whether the initiative will be successful, dessert lovers started coming very shorty after the patisserie opened, and they also stared coming back and spreading the word of this sweet new wonder from Volosko.

The rest, as the saying goes, is history.

OUR UNIQUE PRODUCTS
AND SERVICE

Creating a unique dessert is neither an easy nor a fast process.

The first step is to choose one flavor. Then it is necessary to think about other ingredients that will upgrade that flavor and which combination to use. Then comes the phase of experimenting and trying different things, again and again, and sometime after the fifth time the process is finally successful. After about a month – voilà! The new cake is in the display case.

KAOKAKAO CREATIONS AND RECIPES

Kaokakao has its own interpretations of famous cakes, such as the Italian cream cake Mille Feuille, which is said to be masterfully made by our patisserie. However, we are especially proud of the other 60 percent of the offer, which is made up of Anja’s own creations and recipes. Among them, some favorites have already emerged that guests have been ordering for years, such as the Volosko cake.

Kaokakao delights its guests with numerous sweet delicacies, warm drinks and excellent coffee, but also with breakfast and dessert wines that blend perfectly with our cakes. The patisserie also offers catering services and makes sweets for various events such as birthdays and weddings, and we make sure that our cakes are personalized and match the personality of the celebrators, which is why they are very popular.

PASTRY-MAKING TECHNIQUES

The techniques are based on the tradition of French and Italian pastry-making, as well as on trendy molds that this industry produces every year. However, flavors and their perfect balance are our number one priority, and this is reflected in every dessert carefully designed and made by the Kaokakao patisserie. And to create high-quality cakes, we use high-standard ingredients, as well as chocolate, butter, cream and fresh seasonal fruit of finest quality. Semi-finished products and powdered formulations are never used in Kaokakao.

Even though traditional cakes are more popular, Anja constantly introduces new flavors, shapes and combinations, and her unusual creations transform common sweet delicacies into mesmerizing desserts that cannot be found anywhere else. The market recognizes that and awards Kaokakao with the demand for exactly these kinds of cakes that are different and have Anja’s signature.

We make desserts that evoke a feeling of uniqueness and comfort, and we have also developed a service that takes care of each guest and, in the spirit of a family business, creates a feeling of closeness, attention, safety and trust.
